Oban by way of Stirling

August 19, 2012

After Edinburgh, we were sad to part ways with my aunt, uncle and cousin, but Tommy really wanted to play golf and we had made plans to head northwest.  We rented a car and my parents convinced me that I should drive because of my “quicker reflexes” and “young eyes.”  Really I just think they wanted a DD.

I spent the first hour or two remembering to drive on the left side of the road, and the rest of the week being terrified of being run off the road.  The roads are SO NARROW, so every time a truck or bus would be coming in the opposite direction I would wince a little and grip the steering wheel very tightly.  I made it though!

We stopped at Stirling Castle.CIMG1423

We liked the fact that we could go inside all the different rooms/buildings, since by this point it was pouring (another fun factor in the driving).CIMG1425

And enjoyed views of the William Wallace monument.CIMG1426

We ate lunch at the castle café for convenience’s sake, and continued driving.  We stopped just long enough to take a picture of this castle, which was used for filming Monty Python and the Holy Grail.CIMG1429

We finally made it to Oban, a little coastal town.  We checked into our B&B (we pulled over at a gas station to ask for directions and the attendant pointed across the street.  Doh!), then walked in to town and had dinner at Ee’usk, an awesome seafood restaurant right on the docks.CIMG1431

I had never had scallops with the little tail/neck things still attached!CIMG1435

After dinner we walked along the bay as far as this church…CIMG1437

…where I stole and then threw away all of the pamphlets asking people to sign a petition to make sure gay marriage will not be allowed in Scotland.  Shhh.
